Departments from 5 Communities Called to Fight Blaze Last Night

Fire departments from five communities were called last night to fight a spectacular blaze in the downtown section of this resort town on the Door County peninsula. Official estimates of damage ranged up to $150,000.

Chief damage was confined to Bunda’s general store, which had been remodeled and had advertised a grand opening for today. The fire started in the Bunda warehouse. Gentry Buress, a clerk at Bunda’s was burned while trying to connect a hose in the basement shortly after the blaze was discovered.

The flames spread to Pahl’s hardware store and the Mary Alice beauty shop before fire departments from Sturgeon Bay, Ephraim, Fish Creek, and Bailey’s Harbor, aiding the Sister Bay Department, brought them under control.
