Sister Bay’s largest fish house was completely destroyed by fire early Thursday evening. Owner Dan Lindal estimated the loss at between $8,000 and $10,000, only partly covered by insurance.

A total of 80 boxes of gill nets, two large pond nets and a number of items of fishing equipment were destroyed. The Sister Bay fire department was hampered in its work by explosions of gas and oil drums stored in the building. The blaze was believed to have started in a defective chimney.

Fish House is Razed by Fire

Owner Lindal Reports $8,000 to $10,000 Loss.

Sister Bay’s largest fish house was completely destroyed by fire early Thursday evening. Owner Dan Lindal estimates the loss at between $8,000 and $10,000, only partly covered by insurance.

A total of 80 boxes of gill nets, two large pond nets and a number of other items of fishing equipment were destroyed. Nets on the drying frames around the building were saved.

The Sister Bay fire department, which fought the fire for over three hours to prevent it from spreading to adjoining property, was greatly hampered by exploding gas and oil drums stored in the building. It was necessary to stop traffic on Highway 52 and 57 for over an hour because of the danger of explosions.

The fire, believed to have started in a defective chimney, was discovered by the owner from his nearby residence shortly after 6 o’clock. The building will be replaced as soon as weather permits.
